Bows are still in at Simone Rocha’s first couture collection for Jean Paul Gaultier
Sheer panniers! Devil horn bustiers! At the heart of the collection were those flowers, plus conical corsets. From bud to decay, every stage is telling you something. These words were the very first ones that came to my mind, and have very much been the process.
Following her introduction to menswear last season, the looks coexisted seamlessly with her womenswear this collection. LOOK 1.
The models wore eyeleted and strapped thick soled oxfords or adorned Crocs, some in a short gumboot style. A long black dress in sections of fine jersey was peppered with lines of gleaming eyelets, while a red lurex-shot knit pencil skirt was topped with a matching knit hoodie with more beading at the ears. More apparently conventional dresses in crushed golden velvet, pale pink brocade, and bow-bedecked chocolate taffeta exhibited a twisted primness: prim-iscuous. The fabrics were pressed to seem recently disinterred after long slumber, perhaps in a coffin. One dress was embellished with, and many bags were shaped after, a shaggy, warped-headed black or brown dog with startling red beaded eyes that Rocha modeled after the Church Grim, a spectral canine once believed to be our final companion on the road to oblivion.
Fresh roses replaced traditional bridal bouquets, nestled between layers of sheer tulle, and fabric renditions of roses embellished dresses and jackets. Models gracefully clutched single stems crafted from cotton or pearls, while red rose tattoos adorned bare skin. The enchanting rose motif saturated the collection. However, they retain a touch of whimsy—that Rocha is known for— with the pearl daisy emblem sitting on the hardware clasp.

In tandem with this inspiration and unlike her previous collections, the FW23 collection explored the feeling of being close to the earth and feeling rooted. This essence could easily be felt through the rustic elements and materials that Rocha interlaced into the collection: straw, crocheted knits, lurex, and so on. Last year, Simone Rocha also debuted her first menswear collection and this new addition was also carried onto the Fall 2023 presentation. Although menswear was dominated by a darker color palette, Rocha still introduced plenty of her signature detailing — rich textures and embellishments — helping garments to retain a gender-neutral feel.
In a supersized moment, Rocha sent a model down the catwalk in a cropped sleeveless top made entirely of soft fabric roses , paired with satin black trousers featuring a coordinating bloom at the hip.
